Hemlock and After – Angus Wilson

I can understand why Wilson, a favourite of mine, is so out of favour these days. There is a definite sense of snobbishness in this depiction of the well-off English after the war.

In its defence, it all rings true on a human level and there is some fascinating insight into gay life during this period.

For long periods nothing much seems to be happening, and its’s not until the end that you realise how well plotted it is.
