The Woman in Black – Susan Hill

I’ve not read too many scary books, but to my untrained eye this is a terrific ghostly chiller. It’s a classic set-up: a young lawyer visits a spooky, isolated house to tidy up the affairs of a deceased client, whereupon strange noises and apparitions begin to appear.

These things are all about atmosphere and I was completely sucked in, in the end I finished it almost in a single sitting.
