Journey to the Centre of the Earth - Jules Verne

I was surprised by how long this took to get going, with nearly half the book taken up by the establishment of characters and social observation before we finally descend into the Icelandic volcano. Once underground, though, things trot along rather entertainingly. It’s impossible not to picture James Mason as the cranky professor.
