Poems and Songs – Leonard Cohen



It is a new experience to me to read song lyrics from the printed page, unless you count innumerable teenage hours spent poring over Bruce Springsteen liner notes. It is striking how weak many of the words seen when stripped from their musical context. The tune and delivery are obviously crucial to the power of the original medium, and the relentless ABAB structures really plod.
