A Boy’s Own Story – Edmund White

I think this was an important book in the history of queer writing, as it took an explicitly gay coming-of-age story and brought it into the literary mainstream. I suppose the British equivalent might be The Line of Beauty.

The writing is excellent and the echoes of Catcher in theRye are intriguing, but I prefer Hollinghurst.
